Our full review

The most effective OTC acne treatment available. Period. Adapalene is a third-generation retinoid that was prescription-only until 2016 (in the US). It's more stable than retinol, less irritating, and specifically designed for acne. Clinical trials show it's as effective as tretinoin 0.025% for acne with significantly less irritation. For comedonal acne (blackheads, closed comedones), nothing OTC comes close. It also has anti-aging benefits (stimulates collagen, like all retinoids). At 12-15 EUR, it's the single best investment for acne-prone skin. If you have persistent acne and you're not using adapalene, you're wasting time and money on less effective products.

How to use

Apply a pea-sized amount to clean DRY face every night. Start every other night for the first 2 weeks. Apply to entire face, not just spots (it prevents new acne from forming). Follow with moisturiser. SPF mandatory. Takes 8-12 weeks for full results - be patient. Can be combined with benzoyl peroxide (use BP in AM, adapalene in PM).

Who is it for?

Best for: acne (all types but especially comedonal), prevention of new breakouts, anti-aging as a bonus. NOT for: pregnancy (retinoid), very sensitive skin without building tolerance, skin without acne (use retinol instead).

What to expect

Week 1-4: PURGING (this is normal - existing clogs surface faster). Week 4-8: purging subsides, new breakouts decrease. Week 8-12: significant improvement in acne, smoother texture. Month 6+: consistently clearer skin. The purge scares people away - don't give up before week 12.

Common mistakes

1. Quitting during the purge (normal, temporary, 4-8 weeks). 2. Spot-treating instead of full face. 3. Applying to wet skin. 4. Not using moisturiser (adapalene dries). 5. Expecting results in 2 weeks (minimum 8-12 weeks). 6. Using with other strong actives early on (introduce slowly).

FAQ

Adapalene vs retinol for acne?
Adapalene wins for acne. It's specifically designed for it - more stable, less irritating, and targets comedones directly. Retinol is better for anti-aging. If your main concern is acne, use adapalene. If it's aging, use retinol. If both, adapalene handles both (it's a retinoid).

How it compares

Differin Adapalene Gel 0.1% vs The Ordinary Retinol 0.5%

Different tools for different jobs. Adapalene = purpose-built for acne (retinoid). Retinol 0.5% = general anti-aging. For acne, adapalene is significantly more effective. For pure anti-aging without acne, retinol is fine. Adapalene costs ~12 EUR, TO retinol costs 6 EUR.
